Dr Chérif Benameur
Medical Director — Interventional Radiology
Dr Chérif Benameur is the medical director of the Nelson Mandela Diagnostic and Care Centre in Oran. He has practiced radiology for over 40 years.
Area of Expertise
Dr Benameur specializes in image-guided sampling techniques, including:
- CT-guided punctures
- Ultrasound-guided punctures
- Guided biopsies
These techniques allow precision sampling under real-time imaging guidance, as part of the diagnostic process for a range of conditions.
A Career Spanning Over 40 Years
Dr Benameur studied medicine in Algiers before pursuing his specialization in radiology in France. He then returned to Algiers, where he practiced in the public hospital system and rose to the position of department head (chef de service) at Kouba Hospital.
He opened his private practice in Tiaret, which he ran until 1996.
He co-founded the Centre d'Imagerie Médicale d'Oran (CIMO) in Oran, alongside Drs Boukhatmi, Tourabi, Mekaouche, and Elagag, equipped with the first private CT scanner in western Algeria — a founding milestone for modern medical imaging in the region.
He opened his own private practice in Oran, equipped with a CT scanner and dedicated in particular to guided puncture and biopsy procedures. Over the years, his expertise in this field established him as one of the region's reference physicians for these techniques.
At Centre Mandela
Building on this career, Dr Benameur now leads Centre Mandela — a project that brings together, under one roof, his full experience in conventional radiology, CT imaging, and interventional radiology. He oversees the centre's medical activity and personally performs guided puncture and biopsy procedures, in coordination with the imaging team.
